A Cobb County police officer tries to calm an obviously nervous woman during a DUI traffic stop by explaining to her that “We only kill black people.”
WSB Channel 2 in Atlanta obtained a video in which the woman tells the police officer that she is afraid to move because of all the recent police killings.
“Remember, we only kill black people. We only kill black people, right?” Lt. Greg Abbott said during the July traffic stop.
According to WGCL Channel 46, the Cobb County Police Department has put Abbott on administrative duty while an investigation of the incident is being conducted.
Abbott’s lawyer, Lance LoRusso says it’s obvious his client was trying to “de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger.”
“In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest,” LoRusso says.
Although the police chief, Mike Register, told WSB that there are no racial complaints against Abbott and that he’s a “good officer,” he still put out a statement regarding the situation: “No matter what the context, statements like these are unacceptable and are not indicative of the type of culture we are trying to facilitate here in the police department, as well as within the county.”
